As the initial local situation of each European Capital of Culture (ECOC) might be quite different - culturally, politically, socially, economically, financially - planned objectives of the respective ECOC can also differ from one another. Those can be urban, regional and metropolitan development, (new) positioning on the European map, image change, increased participation of the population in cultural offers or stimulation of (cultural) tourism. 

European Capitals of Culture are therefore more than arts and cultural events - they are long-term, culturally driven urban and regional development projects with an European dimension. The title "Cultural Capital of Europe" is not to be understood as a price for an done accomplishment, but rather as a (self-financed) scholarship for further development!

These are more or less the same rules for all ECOC: habits have to be questioned, good and well-tried should be strengthened, new dared and blind spots should be worked on. In this case a critical reflection with its own city identity, its history, mentality and culture is indispensable! 

Based on many years of experience - both of us as former employees in ECOC-organisations as well as experts in almost all the ECOC of the past 10 years - our know-how about the project as well as our networking within the ECOC family (informal forum of all current and future ECOC) and other European networks we will be at your disposal for the consultation and support of concept developments in the run-up to the application, in the application phase as well as during the preparation for the year of European Capital of Culture!
