VESZPREM 2023

With Veszprém in western Hungary and the area around Lake Balaton, another city and its region have been named European Capital of Culture in 2023.  Veszprém is one of the oldest cities in Hungary. The first bishop's see was founded here at the beginning of the 11th century, the oldest university is located here, and Hungary's kings and queens were crowned here for centuries. Today, the city with its 60.000 inhabitants is characterised by industry and culture. Because of the musical diversity in the region, Veszprém has already been named a UNESCO City of Music.

The ECOC team's focus is to better connect the already existing communities of the city and the region. One goal is to stop the exodus of young people and students and to promote the influx. The many cultural events are also intended to draw attention to existing problems and make the region more liveable in the long term.

In Veszprém, the focus lies also on the renewal of the city centre: to polish up the image of Lake Balaton as Hungary's Riviera and to boost it with new cultural attractiveness.
