After 15 years, once again a German city is the European Capital of Culture. Chemnitz will present a new side of itself in 2025. From its heyday as a leading centre of the textile and automotive industry to its reorientation after reunification, the city has undergone an impressive transformation. In the process, it has always retained its inventive spirit and cultural identity. East German identity in a Western European country is just one focus of the varied programme of the Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025. A visit reveals the diverse sides of the city: industrial culture, Eastern modernism, sporting tradition, craft tradition, green recreational areas, Art Nouveau architecture as well as first-class museums and theatres, open spaces for subcultures and culinary delights.
Many new cultural locations have emerged, such as the HKW (combined heat and power plant) - North, which was shut down at the beginning of the year and will host the 22nd edition of the ‘Begehungen’ art festival, or the "garage campus" in a listed and renovated tram depot. This will be a place for creativity and neighbourhood development with new appeal.
There are also exciting stories and places to discover in the region around Chemnitz, such as the largest art collection of the GDR uranium mining company SDAG-Wismut in Zwickau, which is opening its doors to the general public for the first time. With over 4,200 works, the Wismut art collection was the most extensive company collection in the GDR and an impressive testimonial of its own specific history.
