The Slovenian town of Nova Gorica, European Capital of Culture 2025, is sending out a strong signal in favour of a united Europe - without borders.
Together with the Italian town of Gorizia (Görz), Nova Gorica shares this title, as the European-Yugoslavian border, which (to this day) runs through the centre of the town, was hermetically sealed off until 1991 - the remaining border fence was only torn down in 2007. The aim of this European Capital of Culture is to explore the shared history, to come to terms with it artistically and to develop new narratives together.
Under the motto ‘Go Borderless!’, Nova Gorica not only wants to continue to grow together culturally and linguistically, but also to dismantle the remaining actual borders within the city, one example of which is the KHE District - the centre of the European Capital of Culture 2025, which was created on the former border strip. Today, this space serves as an intervention area, meeting place and memorial at the same time. Nedan Rusjan Bric, who has been involved in the cross-border initiative from the very beginning, is convinced that ‘two different cultures that have not forgotten their history, but can also shape the future together’.
Apart from the exciting and multi-layered history, the region around Nova Gorica also offers breathtaking nature, which gives visitors unforgettable impressions. From the rolling hills of the Soča Valley to the green vineyards that stretch along the Slovenian-Italian border, the landscape invites you to explore and relax in the midst of unspoilt nature.
