For the first time in the almost 40-year history of European Capitals of Culture, the title has been awarded to an inner-Alpine region.
The Salzkammergut with its 23 municipalities was exemplary for the whole of Europe and showed that the future can be shaped together despite all differences.
In 2024, art and cultural initiatives could have been experienced at numerous locations in the Salzkammergut - a colorful, thought-provoking mix of regional impulses, local and international artists, with a sustainable approach, appreciating tradition and at the same time sharpening our view of how cultural resources can be used to shape the future.
The programme of the European Capital of Culture Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 struck a balance between these areas of tension in four key areas.
In the programme lines "Power & Tradition", "Culture in Flux", "Dharing Salzkammergut - The Art of Travelling" and "Globalokal - Building The New", Bad Ischl Salzkammergut 2024 addressed important topics of the region, Europe and the world. It provided new impetus, brought the diversity of historically rooted and contemporary craft, art and culture to the fore and linked the region internationally.
