Visitors to the southern Estonian city could have expected a colourful and rich programme. Tartu is considered the country's secret cultural centre.

Its tradition as a university city has always made it the intellectual centre of Estonia. In Tartu, the second largest city in Estonia, the country's first theatre was built, the first newspaper was published and the first singing festival was held.

The motto of the Tartu 2024 programme was "Arts of Survival". It is believed that the ability to laugh not only at others, but also at oneself, is an art and a skill that unites the inhabitants of the Baltic States and gives them great strength. There are many unanswered questions about the friendship of the Baltic states.

It is about the knowledge, skills and values that can help to lead a better life in the future. As a community, Estonia wanted to share its history and survival skills and also learn from others. Inspired by culture, the main goal of Tartu 2024 was to build a better future.

The Tartu 2024 programme included over 1000 events in 350 projects that took place during the Capital of Culture year and in which everyone could participate.
